Overview

Mobile applications have become one of the main ways for businesses and organizations to boost engagement, as around 90% of smartphone users spend time on apps. For payments in particular, mobile apps play a critical role in making transactions fast, secure, and convenient.

Because so much depends on these apps, rigorous testing is essential to keep them reliable and secure, with a consistent experience across devices and operating systems. Manual testing falls short of covering all the major scenarios, so automated testing is needed to speed up the process and shorten the time to market.

One of our clients built a mobile app for schools and needed exactly this. Let’s understand how our team implemented end-to-end automated testing for the app.

Challenges

The client’s app lets parents view their child’s marks and fees, pay school fees, and handle related tasks. The whole user experience depends on the app working correctly, especially in payment workflows, where users expect smooth performance. Any delay, failure, or inconsistency can directly hurt their trust. As per a recent study, 70% of users abandon apps that take too long to load.

The app received frequent updates as new features were added, so regular regression testing was needed. Every new feature, configuration change, or bug fix could unintentionally break existing workflows such as login, viewing marks, checking fees, payment processing, transaction confirmation, and error handling.

However, manual regression testing proved to be time and resource intensive. It caused issues like these:

  • Regression cycles were long.
  • Releases took longer to go out.
  • The risk of human error went up.
  • Device coverage was limited.
  • The testing effort could not scale with the app.

The answer was to automate the app’s testing completely. But that raised another question: which automation tool or framework should the team use?

A QA engineer manually running a payment flow across a bench of phones and tablets while a laptop and tablet beside her show a spreadsheet-style test tracker.
Before automation, each release meant long cycles of manual regression testing on a limited set of devices.

Our Strategy

To address the time-intensive manual regression testing, our team put in place an automated regression testing strategy built for the hybrid mobile app. The goal was to validate all of the app’s features consistently across releases, while reducing manual effort and making releases more predictable.

To choose the right tool, our QA expert carried out an extensive analysis and decided on an Appium-based automation framework, which supports scalable regression testing across devices.

Our Solution

Here’s how our team implemented an end-to-end, Appium-based automated test framework for the app.

  1. 01

    Application and Architecture Analysis

Our team of QA engineers analyzed the hybrid app’s architecture and identified the critical user journeys, such as authentication, viewing marks and fees, payment initiation, transaction confirmation, and failure handling. We then finalized the regression-critical flows and set the automation priorities.

  2. 02

    Tool and Environment Setup

We configured Appium as the core mobile automation tool, along with the drivers and SDKs needed for both Android and iOS. The test environments were set up to mirror real-world usage.

  3. 03

    Framework Design and Structure

We designed a modular automation framework around Appium, following reusable design principles. It had separate layers for common utilities, shared components, and configuration, which kept duplication low and maintenance simple.

  4. 04

    Automation of Core Mobile Workflows

Our team developed end-to-end test scripts that simulate real user interactions, including navigation, form inputs, payment processing, and transaction validation. To improve coverage and speed, the tests were set up to run in parallel across multiple devices and OS versions on BrowserStack.

  5. 05

    Regression Suite Creation

Finally, we grouped the automated test cases into a structured regression suite, so the critical scenarios run consistently with every code change or release. The suite was integrated into the Azure DevOps CI pipeline, which triggers the tests automatically on every new build.

An enterprise CI/CD and mobile test dashboard on a large monitor showing a regression run across paired-down Android and iOS devices, almost every case passing, with a rack of physical test devices running unattended beside it.
The regression suite now runs automatically on every new build, across real Android and iOS devices on BrowserStack.

Business Outcomes

  • Automated around 350 test cases across the hybrid mobile app.
  • Reduced the manual testing effort by 95%.
  • Increased device coverage, with tests running on hundreds of real mobile devices across different operating systems and versions.

Conclusion

By implementing an Appium-based mobile automation framework, we gave the client a reliable and scalable way to test their hybrid mobile app. Integrating the framework with the Azure DevOps CI pipeline gives faster feedback on build quality, which helps the team find issues early and keep releases stable.
